100 new green spaces in Gothenburg inaugurated
Gothenburg's city centre is now enriched with 1000 square metres of greenery on 100 of the city's bus shelter roofs. The new green areas were inaugurated yesterday at lunch on Gustaf Adolf's Square by Toni Orsulic, chairman of the Gothenburg Traffic Committee.
Jonas Wahlström from the Skansen Aquarium joined us for the day and told us that the sedum grass planted on the roofs of bus shelters is a vital habitat for pollinating insects and spiders, and that humanity would die out without insects. Of course, he brought a big hairy spider out of his breast pocket and Toni Orsulic was brave enough to have her picture taken with the Tarantella on her forehead.

- I don't know any city that works with sedum in this way, this is almost unique. And it's really important for all the pollinating insects and spiders, I think the plants that people have on their balconies inside the city will be greener and nicer thanks to this, I've never heard of such a good initiative with sedum roofs that are so widespread, says Jonas Wahlström.
Toni Orsulic was proud of the green initiative that is being implemented in cooperation with JCDecaux, which is providing the bus shelters and green roofs.
-With 100 green roofs, Gothenburg will be the top 3 in Europe with systematic investment in sedum and the largest in the Nordic region. Moreover, without disturbing the existing infrastructure but instead using the unused space on the bus shelters' roofs, said Toni Orsulic when he inaugurated the green bus shelters.
A heavily trafficked and built-up inner city is easily made greener with sedum grass planted on existing infrastructure. By 2022, 100 of Gothenburg's bus lanes will be enriched with green roofs, as decided by the Traffic Board, and 30 of the green roofs are already in place. The investment will make Gothenburg a role model and provide a greener and healthier city.
