Purposes
Storing and/or accessing information on a device
Cookies, device or similar online identifiers (e.g. login-based identifiers, randomly assigned identifiers, network-based identifiers) together with other information (e.g. type of browser and information, language, screen size, supported technologies, etc.) may be stored or read on your device so that your device is recognised each time it connects to an app or to a website, for one or more of the purposes described here.
  • Most of the purposes described in this notice rely on storing or accessing information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a provider or publisher may need to store a cookie on your device when you first visit a website in order to recognise your device during your subsequent visits (by retrieving information from that cookie each time).
Using limited data to select adverts
Adverts presented to you on this service may be based on limited data, such as the website or app you are using, your non-exact location, your device type, or the content you interact with (for example, to limit the number of times an advert is shown to you).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric cars to environmentally conscious users living in an urban area after office hours; the advert appears on a page with related content (e.g. an article on climate change action) after 6.30 p.m., for users whose non-exact location suggests they are in an urban area.
  • A major producer of watercolour paints wants to run an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range. They want to diversify their target audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and also avoid showing the advert next to inappropriate content (for example, articles on how to paint your house). The number of times the advert has been shown to you is detected and limited, to avoid it being shown too often.
Create profiles for personalised advertising
Information about your activity on this service (e.g. forms you submit, content you view) may be stored and combined with other information about you (e.g. information from your previous activity on this service and on other websites or apps) or similar users. This information is then used to create or improve a profile about you (which may include possible interests and browsing habits). This and other entities may (also later) use your profile to show adverts that seem more relevant based on your possible interests.
  • If you read several articles about which cycling accessories are the best to buy, this information can be used to create a profile of your interest in cycling accessories. Such a profile can be used or enhanced later, on the same or another website or app, to show you adverts for a particular brand of cycling accessories. If you also view a vehicle configurator on a luxury car manufacturer's website, this information can be combined with your interest in bicycles to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury equipment for your bicycle.
  • A clothing company wants to promote its new collection of exclusive children's clothes. The clothing company contacts an agency that works with clients who in turn have wealthy customers (e.g. high-end supermarkets). They ask the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who are likely to be high-income and have recently had children, so that these can later be used to display adverts on partner apps based on these profiles.
Using profiles to select personalised advertising
Advertising presented to you on this Service may be based on your advertising profiles, which may reflect your activity on this Service or on other websites or apps (such as the forms you submit, content you view), possible interests and browsing habits.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a sale on running shoes. The retailer wants to target adverts to users who have previously looked at running shoes on the retailer's mobile app. Tracking technologies can be used to identify that you have previously used the mobile app to search for running shoes and to show you the corresponding advert in the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising after a person has searched for cycling accessories on a website can be used to display relevant advertising for cycling accessories on a mobile app from another organisation.
Create profiles to personalise content
Information about your activity on this Service (e.g. forms you submit, non-advertised content you view) may be stored and combined with other information about you (e.g. information from your past activity on this Service or on other websites or apps) or similar users. This information is then used to create or improve a profile about you (which may include, for example, possible interests and browsing habits). Your profile may (also later) be used to display content that seems more relevant based on your potential interests, for example by customising an order in which content is displayed to you, making it even easier for you to find content that matches your interests.
  • You read several articles on how to build a tree house on a social media platform. This information can be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoor activities as well as DIY guides (with the aim of allowing personalisation of content, so that you can, for example, see more blog posts and articles on tree houses and log cabins in the future).
  • You have watched three videos about space exploration on different TV apps. A news platform you haven't had any contact with can then create a profile that marks space exploration as a possible topic of interest for other videos.
Using profiles to select personalised content
Content shown to you on this Service may be based on your content personalisation profiles, which may reflect your activity on this or other Services (e.g. the forms you submit, content you view), possible interests and browsing behaviour. The profiles can be used, among other things, to customise the order in which content is displayed to you, making it even easier for you to find content (other than advertising) that matches your interests.
  • You read articles about vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use an independent company's cooking app. The profile created about you on the social media platform will be used to present vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have watched three videos about rowing on different websites. An independent video-sharing platform will recommend five other videos about rowing that may be of interest to you when using your TV app, based on a profile created about you when you visited the different websites to watch online videos.
Measuring advertising performance
Information about what adverts are shown to you and how you interact with them can be used to determine how well an advert has worked for you or other users and whether the objectives of the advert were achieved. For example, whether you saw an advert, whether you clicked on it, whether it made you buy a product or visit a website, etc. This is very helpful in understanding the relevance of advertising campaigns.
  • On a publisher's website, you have clicked on an advert for an online store's Black Friday discount, and then purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many of the clicks on the advert led to a purchase.
  • In a publisher's app, you are one of the very few people who have clicked on an online store's advert for a discount related to International Appreciation Day. The publisher wants reports to understand how often a specific ad placement in the app, and in particular the ad related to International Appreciation Day, has been shown to you or other users or how often you or they have clicked on it, to help the publisher and the publisher's partners (e.g. agencies) optimise ad placements.
Measuring content performance
Information about what content is shown to you and how you interact with it can be used to determine, for example, whether the content (other than advertising) reached its intended audience and matched your interests. For example, if you read an article, watch a video, listen to a podcast or look at a product description, how long you spent in this service and the web pages you visit, etc. This is very helpful to understand the relevance of content (other than advertising) shown to you.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a publisher's mobile app and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded, showing that the first hiking post was useful to you and that it managed to interest you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to create more posts about walking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were shown a video about fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
Understand target groups through statistics or combinations of data from different sources
Reports can be generated based on the combination of data sets (such as user profiles, statistics, market research, analytics data) regarding your and other users' interactions with advertising or non-advertising content, to identify common characteristics (for example, to determine which audiences are more receptive to an advertising campaign or to certain content).
  • The owner of an online bookshop wants commercial reporting showing the percentage of visitors who visited and left the bookshop website without buying anything, or who viewed and bought the celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and male/female split in each category. Data relating to your navigation on the website and your personal characteristics are then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience that interacts with its adverts. The advertiser asks a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the advert with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison shows the advertiser that the ad audience mainly accesses the adverts via mobile devices and is likely to be in the age range of 45-60 years.
Developing and improving services
Information about your activity on this service, such as your interaction with adverts or content, can be very helpful to improve products and services and to create new products and services based on user interactions, type of audience, etc. This specific purpose does not include the development or improvement of user profiles and identifiers.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider is noticing an increase in the number of mobile app users and, based on their profiles, sees many of them connecting via mobile connections. The platform is using a new technology to deliver adverts that are formatted for mobile devices and have low bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to show adverts on a new type of consumer device. The advertiser collects information about how users interact with this new type of device to determine if the advertiser can build a new mechanism to display adverts on this type of device.
Using limited data to select content
Content shown to you on this Service may be based on limited data, such as the website or app you are using, your exact location, your device type, or what content you interact (or have interacted) with (for example, to limit the number of times an advert is shown to you).
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses offered by a language school, to enhance travelling experiences abroad. The school's blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page and are selected based on your non-exact location (for example, blog posts explaining the curriculum of languages other than the language of the country you are in).
  • A mobile sports news app has launched a new page with articles reporting on the latest football matches. Each article includes videos from a separate streaming platform showing the highlights of each match. If you fast forward a video, this information can be used to select a shorter video to play next.
Special purposes
Ensuring security, preventing and detecting fraud and correcting errors
Your data may be used to monitor and prevent unusual and potentially fraudulent activities (e.g. relating to advertising, robotic ad clicks) and to ensure that systems and processes are working properly and securely. It may also be used to correct any problems you, the publisher or advertiser may encounter in the delivery of content and adverts and in your interaction with them.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers adverts from different advertisers to its network of partner websites. The advertising intermediary notices a large increase in clicks on adverts relating to an advertiser and uses data on the source of the clicks to determine that 80 % of all clicks come from bots rather than people.
Delivering and displaying adverts and content
Certain information (such as an IP address or the capacity of a device) is used to ensure the technical compatibility of the content or advert and to facilitate the delivery of the content or advert to your device.
  • If you click on a link in an article, you are normally sent to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2) the server responds ("here is the article you requested"), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to correctly display the information/images that are part of the article you requested. Technically, such information exchange is necessary to deliver the content displayed on your screen.
Save and communicate your privacy choices
The preferences you make for the purposes and devices listed in this notice are stored and made available to the relevant devices in the form of digital signals (e.g. a character string). This is necessary to deliver this service and ensure that the relevant devices respect your choices.
  • When you visit a website and are offered to consent or not to consent to the use of personalised advertising profiles, your choice is saved and made available to advertising providers, so that advertising presented to you follows your preferences.
Features
Matching and combining data from other data sources
Information about your activity on this service may be matched and combined with other information about you from various sources (for example, your activity on a separate online service, your use of an in-store loyalty card, or your responses to a survey), in support of the purposes explained in this notice.
Linking different units
For the purposes of this notice, your device may be considered as likely to be connected to other devices belonging to you or your household (for example, because you are logged into the same service on both your phone and your computer, or because you may use the same internet connection on both devices).
Identifies devices based on information transmitted automatically
Your device may be distinguished from other devices based on information that the feature automatically sends when accessing the internet (such as the IP address of your internet connection or the type of browser you are using) in support of the purposes set out in this notice.
Special Features
Using precise geolocation data
With your consent, your exact location (within a radius of less than 500 metres) may be used to support the purposes described in this notice.
Actively reading device characteristics for identification purposes
With your consent, certain characteristics specific to your device may be requested and used to distinguish it from other devices (e.g. installed fonts or plug-ins, the resolution of your screen) in support of the purposes described in this notice.
