Stockholmers' new toilet app is here
Flush the stress when it hurts
- Find the nearest public toilet in Stockholm with new app
Today, World Toilet Day, a new toilet app is being launched so that Stockholmers and visitors can find the nearest open toilet when they are in a hurry. The initiative is backed by JCDecaux, which designs and supplies public toilets free of charge to 15 cities across Sweden.
In Stockholm, JCDecaux currently has 66 toilets spread across the city. All are free to use, accessible, self-cleaning and environmentally friendly. The new app allows you to rate the toilets and see which ones are most popular, most visited, last cleaned and much more. The information is also available on the City of Stockholm website.
- Now we are taking the next step to make the toilets available to the public. Through the app, we want to raise awareness that public toilets exist and that they are free to use. In addition, visitors can rate the toilets, report any faults and, not least, see the current status of each toilet. Smart toilets are convenient and practical for visitors and put pressure on us to manage the toilets. The ToaSverige app will be like a smart real-time reporting system that allows us to take action immediately if feedback is received. I think many people will be surprised at how often the toilets are checked, cleaned and serviced in order to be as fresh as we and the visitors want them to be," says Magnus Heljeberg, CEO of JCDecaux.
Public toilets are a necessity in cities, for both hygiene and health reasons. The Stockholm City Council is in favour of JCDecaux developing its service to the city's residents and tourists. He also reveals another feature of the new app.
- It is hoped that the new app will make it easier for everyone to find public toilets in Stockholm, while helping to fix broken toilets faster. As a bonus, it will also be possible to see all JCDecaux's bicycle pumps in the app, says Daniel Helldén (MP), Stockholm City Council's Traffic Commissioner.
The launch of the app takes place today on World Toilet Day, an official United Nations day dedicated to highlighting the vital importance of toilets. Despite access to sanitation being a human right, two billion people in the world currently live without access to a toilet, according to Wateraid. That means there are more people in the world who have a mobile phone than have a toilet.
In the past year, there have been approximately 425,000 toilet visits in the toilets in Stockholm. Sweden's most visited toilet is in Rålambshovsparken in Stockholm, with over 30,000 visits this year alone. A strong second is the toilet at Hornsberg beach, which has had just under 20 000 visits in 2021. In third place is the toilet at Östra station (KTH) with just over 16 000 visits.
